Lost Lake

Lost Lake is the site of legend, literally. According to the oral tradition of the sx̌ʷəbabš people, it used to be a large lake, inhabited by a jealous lake spirit. This spirit desired a beautiful woman, and it was the spirit’s rivalry with a mortal man that caused the deep lake to be turned into the shallower pool and bog it is today. (Check out Ella Clark’s “Indian Legends of the Pacific Northwest” at the Vashon Library or Vashon Bookshop for the whole story.)

Lost Lake is an important wetland biome and serves as a wildlife corridor for many of our four-legged and winged neighbors. As such, there is no public access. It is being held by the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust for preservation.
