Stewardship Coordinator

Description

The Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust’s work permanently preserves and stewards land on Vashon and Maury Islands in the heart of the Puget Sound. Our Stewardship program consists mainly of on-site preserve management, habitat restoration, trail maintenance, new trail construction, and invasive species removal. The Stewardship Coordinator is responsible for furthering the stewardship goals of the Land Trust by coordinating projects, engaging the community, and supporting program planning. As a member of the Stewardship team, the Coordinator’s efforts are focused on general preserve restoration and trail maintenance, monitoring, and management planning. This position involves regular contact with private landowners and the general public. The successful Stewardship Coordinator is an efficient and effective professional who approaches their work with integrity and a positive attitude. The Stewardship Coordinator reports directly to the Stewardship Director and works with other staff as needed.

Responsibilities of the Stewardship Coordinator include:


Restoration - Work with the Stewardship Director to provide landscape/site assessment, restoration project design, planning, and implementation for restoration projects. This may include:

  • Demolition and disposal of existing structures

  • Coordination w/ contractors

  • Site management

  • Native planting design and installation

  • Invasive species management

  • Trail design & construction


Maintenance

  • Maintain preserves and restoration areas according to management plans. Maintain planting areas for prescribed period and ensure adequate survival and effectiveness

  • Maintain trails, structures, buildings, vehicles, equipment, and other infrastructure

  • Care for nursery stock

Public Access and Community Engagement

  • Manage appropriate public access to Land Trust preserves and properties through scheduled gate closures and other measures. 

  • Support positive relationships between the Land Trust and its neighbors.

  • Help manage public use through appropriate signage, education, and where necessary, enforcement.

  • Build strong relationships with the Land Trust community: 

    • Support org-wide outreach and engagement

    • Participate in educational events and other activities

    • Assist with annual Tree Sale

    • Consult with landowners as appropriate

Management

  • Help lead a team of seasonal Stewardship Interns. Provide personal and career development opportunities for summer interns.

  • Host weekly Stewardship volunteer events and field other volunteer requests, such as community service projects.

  • Host one weekend work party per month.

Monitoring

  • Help with annual monitoring.

  • Conduct ongoing monitoring of Land Trust properties to monitor access, trail/preserve use, trail/preserve condition, and hazards.

  • Ensure the Land Trust is current with its understanding of the property’s environmental/ecological profile, including forest health, stream condition, and restoration processes.

Planning

  • Contribute to annual/seasonal program planning, budgets, work plans, etc.

  • Contribute to updates of preserve management plans

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience. 

  • Experience in restoration project development and implementation. Knowledge and research skills pertaining to local ecologies, plants, wildlife, and other natural resources

  • Ability to develop scope for projects and keep projects working on time and within budget.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with supervisors, staff, volunteers, donors, and the public.

  • Professional, self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently, as part of a team, as well as directing a 2- to 4-person field crew.

  • Basic computer skills required: email, word processing, spreadsheets

  • Capacity to perform strenuous physical work outside in all weather conditions

  • Comfortable working safely in a variety of environments, on- and off-trail, in standing/kneeling/bent-over position

  • Able to safely operate vehicles & equipment, including truck/auto, towing trailer, tractor, chainsaw, brush cutter, shop tools, etc.

Compensation and Schedule


This position is paid an hourly wage of $23.00-25.00 per hour, depending on experience. It is part-time non-exempt, 20 hours/week, and temporary (through December 31, 2025). Benefits include vacation, sick leave, holidays, and retirement.
