Shana Hirsch

Shana is currently a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering at UW. Her two main roles in that position are as Co-Director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center, where she collaborates with industry, government, and university researchers to support innovation in marine energy, and as a researcher for the Environmental DNA (eDNA)  Collaborative, where her job is to make sure that the technology is accessible to those working on biodiversity conservation in the Global South. She came to this work with an interdisciplinary background in sustainability social science, water management, and policy.

Shana is passionate about making sure that the future is biodiverse, even with changes to our climate. She explores these topics in her book, “Anticipating Future Environments” which looks at how ecological restorationists in the Columbia River Basin are dealing with climate change. She has many other side projects, mostly involving novel restoration methods or conservation technologies.

Shana has lived on Vashon since 2006, and she is excited to support the work that the Vashon Land Trust does, as she has seen and enjoyed it first hand.
