Island Center Forest was formerly held by the State of Washington as School Trust lands which were logged to provide revenue for public school construction state-wide. As a result, the forest is a patchwork of areas logged and re-planted at different times. The ‘Valley of the Firs’ section is a distinct example of a single-species method of replanting. The current restoration efforts by King County, in partnership with the Vashon Forest Stewards, follow practices promoting native plant diversity and creating a sustainable-harvest community forest.
