Impact Bioenergy and the Rural Energy Development for Washington Program invite you to attend a FREE “Closing the Loop” event on January 27, 2020, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Matsuda Farm and Vashon Bioenergy Farm at Island Spring Organics tofu factory, on Vashon Island.
The open house event will feature Island Spring Organics’ new anaerobic digester, which processes organic food “waste” into organic biofertilizer (“REDEW”) and ultra-low carbon organic renewable natural gas (“ORNG”) for clean fuel and energy. The event will also highlight trials at Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust’s Matsuda Farm, who are applying the nutrient-rich biofertilizer from the digester to their fields.
Tom Dean, director of the Land Trust, comments on the new technology and its benefits for the farm: “It’s a great [example] of how you can close the carbon and nitrogen loops in a small community – working locally to reduce carbon use and to increase resilience to a changing climate.”
The open house event will also announce a new marketplace to be launched within the next year for farmers and neighboring islanders to subscribe for purchasing the digester co-products and services, including ORNG and milkman REDEW deliveries for on-farm “biofertigation.”
Part educational workshop, part marketplace launch, and part community forum, this will be an exciting event to learn about a new upcycling and renewable energy technology, along with some of its applications for Vashon Island businesses and farms!
*There will also be sustainable eats available, so show up hungry!
**Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly with food, tabling, etc.!
