February Book Group will discuss the book “Witness Tree” by Lynda Mapes. With SPECIAL GUEST: Lynda Mapes! No need to read the book to attend. Lynda will be making a presentation about her year with a century-old oak and the stories it tells about climate change.
The New York Times Book Review:
“WITNESS TREE: Seasons of Change With a Century-Old Oak, by Lynda V. Mapes, portrays trees as “scribes, diarists, historians.” They are “among our oldest journalists.” A reporter herself, covering environmental issues for The Seattle Times, Mapes sets out to tell the story of climate change through one tree. But that is, marvelously, the least of it.
This book offers readers the experience of the changing seasons as people have for centuries, watching for each new bud, listening for each new bird call in spring, savoring the cadence of falling autumn leaves, and the glory of snow on a bare branch, all from the authors year spent under a 100 year old oak in the Harvard Forest.
